Justin Freer discusses Maurice Jarre’s incredible score to the epic 1965 romantic drama film Dr. Zhivago, directed by the great David Lean. In this week’s episode, Justin breaks down two scenes that are linked with one another through a singular emotional thread: loss. In what is considered to be one of the best films of all time, Dr. Zhivago was nominated for ten Academy Awards® and won five of them including Best Original Score. The film’s composer, Maurice Jarre, was a French composer and conductor and considered to be “one of the giants of 20th-century film music.” He was one of the most sought-after composers in the film industry and was not only Oscar® nominated, but won three for Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago, and A Passage to India, all of which were directed by David Lean. He also won four Golden Globes, two BAFTA Awards, and a Grammy.
