Ep. 125 - Alexi Murdoch's 'Away We Go'

Adventure, Comedy, Drama, 17-Jan-2022
We've had numerous other snapshots and Film Music Fridays featuring the great films of director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition, 1917), and this comedy-drama is oftentimes overlooked. Interestingly, it is Mendes' first film without his Thomas Newman collaboration, but we love it nonetheless. With the entire soundtrack performed and composed by singer/songwriter Alexi Murdoch, we feel it is a fantastic companion to this intimate, beautiful character story. There is something unique about Murdoch's compositions - they flow into each moment peacefully, but powerfully. There is no question you are invested the moment the cue starts, to the moment it ends. As with any Mendes picture, the music plays a critical (and sometimes subconscious) role in immersion. If you haven't enjoyed this film, please go watch it.
Murdoch is a British folk musician and songwriter, and has been compared to Nick Drake. His albums have been met with wide critical praise, even placing him on Rolling Stone's Top Ten Artists list.

We feel that this is one of Ennio Morricone's best scores. The work combines liturgical chorales, native drumming, and Spanish-influenced guitars in an attempt to really capture the cultures depicted in the film. Perhaps this is one of Horner's lesser-known scores from the late 90's, but we love it nonetheless. Featuring a gorgeous bagpipe solo with sweeping melodic strings, there is no question that this is Horner doing what he does best - creating an emotional landscape of melody.
