There is no question that Sofia Coppola's 'Marie Antoinette' turned heads on its release in 2006 because of some unique and new artistic choices done at the time. She was able to blend a very 18th century inspired score by Dustin O'Halloran with a modern contemporary soundtrack - a unique almost counter-scoring technique that has become pretty commonplace now. Winning the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, the film follows the journey of Marie Antoinette who was known for her opulent gambling, parties, and excess. The film does an interesting job framing this as a coping mechanism to a failed marriage between her and the future King of France. It is still striking to see and experience this film for its unique creative decisions, great acting, and soundtrack.
The sequence depicted here is a scene that is complete excess - drinking, gambling, dressmaking, shoemaking - anything and everything you can imagine. Have that on top of a track by Bow Wow Wow is a truly interesting and unique cinematic experience. If you haven't seen this film, we definitely recommend you do so.
