Ep. 137 - Giorgio Moroder's 'Flashdance' (feat. Irene Cara)
Drama, Music, Romance, 27-Feb-2022
Adrian Lyne's masterful 1983 dance film has stood the test of time. With Jennifer Beals playing a passionate young dancer who aspires to become a professional ballerina (while working as a steel mill), it is a story that we all can relate to.
This scene in particular is a phenomenal example of where music sets the character free - a moment where she lets go and is completely herself during an audition. She stumbles, and starts again. In doing so, she gets what she always wished for... her acceptance into a prestigious dance school.
With a budget of only $7 million, the film went on to gross over $201 million, and the soundtrack album sold over 700K copies in the first two weeks on sale, and went on to sell over six million copies in the U.S. alone. The RIAA considers the soundtrack to be one of the best selling albums of all time.
Its music garnered nine Grammy Award nominations, including Album of the Year, and won three, one of which was for Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Special. This song, 'Flashdance...What a Feeling' won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance, and both the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song with Moroder and her co-lyricist, Keith Forsey.
