Ep. 38 - George Fenton's 'Memphis Belle'
Action, Drama, War, Music, 15-Feb-2021
Composed by George Fenton, the score for 'Memphis Belle' was nominated for a BAFTA award for Best Original Film Score in 1991. This scene in particular comes at the end of the film, when the famous B-17 is on its way back to home base with without the ability to lower its wheels. The only way they can be lowered is by manually hand cranking the gear down. It is truly a riveting moment considering what everyone had recently been through.
Fenton's score truly captures the essence of this experience seen through the eyes of Belle's crew, from the moment they realize they can't easily land, to when they finally reach home. This score (and film) continues to be one of our favorites.
